Information on auto GPS and mobile mapping systems and portable GPS navigation software?

Used in the States U.S. and Canada. Looking for a mobile mapping system / GPS system for my mobile office (by bus). I thought possibly a GPS receiver to connect on my laptop and mapping software installed, but it seems it can be very awkward to use while driving. Any recommendation on the software and the receiver? If this is not what makes the best dash mobile mapper system with GPS? You must be precise and maps day, or at least evolving.

For my car that uses Caliber P3600 GPS for under $ 300. It is very good and can get the card updated its website. For my laptop I use Delorme Street Atlas USA with GP20 USB ($ 135). Both work well, even if you do not your laptop as a GPS, is a great program for the card you have on your computer.
