Now we expect our new cars come with a serial GPS receiver, and hope that is a portable Garmin GPS. This Gone are the days when it is necessary to look directory in the streets when you're driving or need to rely on someone else gives you misleading information. The GPS device is now almost as familiar as the telephone cell and without it, many of us would be totally and permanently lost.
As we all know what they are and do, but when did it start? As expected, initially developed for military purposes, to track ships, submarines, aircraft, etc, but obviously not long before the commercial viability of GPS have daily use become evident.
The GPS as we know it is based on 24 operational satellites in orbit around the Earth any time within a specified distance of more than 12,000 miles above Earth, but your Garmin handheld GPS uses information only 4 of these satellites at any time.
Each of the orbits satellites of 24 very precise line to ensure that your receiver is always in contact with at least 3 satellites. The satellite 4 is required to synchronize the clocks of other 3 satellites with the clock in your receiver. Because the GPS system requires a time of incredible precision, that is provided courtesy of clocks atomic from the U.S. Naval Observatory. All 24 of the orbiting GPS satellites is equipped with its own atomic clock.
Each portable Garmin GPS receiver need to know where the nearest is 4 satellites at any given time. For this there is a chip installed inside each device that contains a record for each position of a particular time.Likewise satellites, when any of your satellite receiver sends a signal, it is updated to register the satellite on the chip, their device, if necessary.
In determining its position with a GPS device, the accuracy really depends on the type and model you use. Most the Garmin handheld GPS units will give an accuracy of about 10 meters. If you had a GPS back in the year 1990 is likely to remember you had the opportunity to be a hundred meters from where you were told. When the military first authorized commercial use of GPS accuracy was agreed that the new receivers is limited to approx. 100 meters was done by coding errors in the synchronization software for each device. Fortunately, this provision was abolished in 2000.
The portable system Garmin GPS is so accurate, if not more, than any other similar device. You can use safely and happy to do A to B and C to D, even without having to ask how come again. I know a guy who as the only obstacle I've overcome that Mrs. instructs me, is really good this time!
