Why should I update the map with Garmin GPS?

I just bought a Garmin GPS Nuvi350. When I buy the existing 2008 card in it. I think I can use forever, but now I get a message on my GPS that I have the updated map in 2009. Should I upgrade? What if no update and further using the map in 2008 (due to update 2009 Price Map 69.99) or upon reaching expiration date map will not appear on my GPS. If this is a stupid question please give me an excuse, because the first time you use this device.

No, there is no need to update your card to version 09. New versions published each year with updated information on new roads, etc. .. but as you can get to work with version 08, I had to leave. I mine is not updated and have no intention of doing so. Not enough new roads around where I used to pay extra money. The bottom line is they want to pay each year a new card.
